Project Overview: Protecting Historic Public Collections & Wide Entrance Security
A prestigious state central public library holding over 250,000 rare manuscripts, historical archives, and general lending books receives upwards of 3,500 daily students, researchers, and public patrons. The library’s grand architectural entrance features a wide 3.2-meter foyer that presented a serious security and accessibility challenge.
The Security Crisis:
- Severe Book Shrinkage: Despite legacy electromagnetic tattle-tape strips, the library lost hundreds of high-value academic and historical volumes annually due to dead-zone detection angles and blind spots.
- Rampant False Alarms: Old magnetic gates triggered frequent embarrassing false alarms from patrons carrying laptops, metal keychains, or umbrellas, causing security staff to ignore alarms.
- Entrance Bottlenecks & Accessibility Barriers: Narrow magnetic gate corridors caused severe congestion during peak hours and failed to meet ADA/wheelchair accessibility regulations.
Hardware Architecture: 3D Transparent Acrylic HF RFID Security Pedestals
To secure the wide 3.2-meter entrance while maintaining open architectural aesthetics and complete wheelchair accessibility, RFID Softwares deployed an advanced 3-pedestal 3D security gate array:
- 3D Omnidirectional Loop Antennas: We installed premium, transparent acrylic HF RFID Security Gate Pedestals featuring multi-axis 3D loop antenna coils. This geometry creates a continuous, high-density electromagnetic corridor that detects tagged books in any physical orientation—whether flat, upright, spine-down, concealed inside backpacks, or tucked between metallic binders.
- Archival-Grade HF Book Inlays: All 250,000 volumes were retrofitted with acid-free HF Library Inlay Tags (ISO 15693) permanently affixed to inside back covers with archival pH-neutral adhesive that does not damage rare pages.
- Wide ADA-Compliant Aisle Spacing: The 3-pedestal layout provides two wide 1.2-meter walkthrough corridors, easily accommodating wheelchairs, baby strollers, and high-volume student crowds without bottlenecks.
Directional Infrared Filtering & Zero-False-Alarm Logic
To eliminate the nuisance of false alarms, the security gates incorporate dual-beam directional infrared sensors:
- Directional Movement Discrimination: Integrated infrared beams continuously track whether a patron is exiting or entering the library. If an unauthorized book tag is detected while a patron is walking into the library, the system suppresses the alarm—ensuring patrons returning books are never falsely signaled.
- Instant Visual & Acoustic Alarms: When an unauthorized book (with an active EAS security bit) crosses the threshold in the exit direction, the pedestal instantly illuminates high-intensity red LED lightbars and sounds an acoustic alarm.
- Automated Video Snapshot Trigger: The gate controller interfaces directly with the library’s IP CCTV system, automatically bookmarking the exact camera timestamp and angle of the security breach.
Circulation Desk Deactivation & Koha Real-Time Event Logging
Book check-in/check-out and security arming/disarming is fully synchronized with the library’s Koha ILS:
- Staff Circulation Workstation: At the circulation counter, librarians use an EAS Magnetic Deactivator & RFID Workstation to process checkouts. Scanning the book on Koha disarms the EAS security bit in 200ms.
- Real-Time Security Event Logging: If an un-issued book triggers the gate alarm, our Koha RFID Middleware captures the tag UID, queries Koha to retrieve the exact book title, author, and accession number, and logs the security incident to the head librarian’s dashboard in real time.
Operational Results & Public Library ROI
Deploying the 3D RFID Security Gate system delivered 100% collection protection and restored a welcoming library environment:
- Zero Unaccounted Book Loss: Elimination of book theft protected invaluable public and historic collections worth crores.
- 99.9% Reduction in False Alarms: Directional infrared filtering completely eliminated false alarms, restoring staff trust in the security system.
- Smooth 3,500+ Daily Patron Flow: Wide dual-corridor walkthrough eliminated entrance bottlenecks and provided full wheelchair accessibility.
- Full Investment Payback in 3.6 Months: Eliminated annual book replacement budgets and reduced security staffing overhead fully recouped project costs in just over one quarter.
