UHF RFID Read Range & Link Budget Calculator
Estimate realistic read distances for industrial dock doors, conveyor tunnels, and handheld terminals. Computes Friis RF path loss, tag IC wake-up thresholds, and checks compliance with India WPC 4-Watt EIRP regulatory ceilings.
UHF RFID Read Range & Link Budget Estimator
Safe operational limit with multipath mitigation & antenna detuning buffer.
Maximum line-of-sight range in ideal non-metallic open air.
The Physics of Passive UHF RFID Read Range
Unlike active battery-powered transponders, passive UHF tags harvest all their operating energy directly from the electromagnetic wave emitted by the reader antenna. Consequently, the forward link (tag wake-up power) is almost always the limiting constraint on read distance.
• P_tx: Conducted reader output power minus coaxial cable losses (Watts)
• G_reader & G_tag: Transmit and receive antenna gains (linear scale)
• λ (Wavelength): ~0.3464 meters for 866 MHz (India WPC frequency)
• d: Maximum interrogation distance (meters)
• n (Path Loss Exponent): 2.0 in open air; 2.3 to 3.0 in metallic warehouse aisles
