SGTIN-96 (Serialized Global Trade Item Number, 96-bit) is the global GS1 standard for encoding retail trade item barcodes (such as EAN-13 or GTIN-14) combined with a unique item-level serial number into the EPC memory bank of UHF Gen2 RFID tags.
How does an EAN-13 barcode convert into a 24-character hex EPC?
An EAN-13 barcode is prefixed with a packaging indicator (0 for base items) to form a 14-digit GTIN. The GS1 Tag Data Standard TDS 2.0 strips the indicator and check digit, then divides the remainder into a GS1 Company Prefix and Item Reference based on the partition table. These values, along with a 38-bit serial number, are encoded into a 96-bit binary string which converts directly into 24 hexadecimal characters.
How do I know my GS1 Company Prefix length and partition value?
Your GS1 Company Prefix length is issued directly by GS1 India (or your local GS1 member organization) on your barcode certificate. In India, prefixes are commonly 7 digits (Partition 5), 8 digits (Partition 4), or 9 digits (Partition 3).
