Heavy-Duty Wooden Crate Transit & Unboxing

Because high-frequency library security gates feature precision transparent acrylic pedestal panels with internal multi-axis antenna coils, secure freight transportation is critical. The entire dual-pedestal gate assembly was shipped in a reinforced, shock-absorbing industrial wooden crate designed to withstand transit vibrations and eliminate micro-fracturing risks.

Upon arrival at the Gole Market library premises, our installation engineers conducted a thorough unboxing protocol: removing the wooden exterior, verifying structural integrity, checking acrylic clarity, and positioning the master and slave pedestals at the library doorway.

Step 1.1 · Safe Delivery

Reinforced Industrial Wooden Packaging

Custom-built shock-dampening wooden crate ensuring zero transit vibration damage to internal RF loop coils.

Step 1.2 · Acrylic Verification

Pedestal Inspection & Pre-Positioning

Base Enclosure & Reader Module Electronics Architecture

The intelligence of the RFID security gate resides within the lower base compartment of the master pedestal. By releasing the bottom recessed stainless-steel mounting screws, the protective aluminum cover lifts off to expose the core electronic architecture.

The modular layout houses a 13.56 MHz high-power multi-channel reader board, a regulated industrial 24V DC switch-mode power supply, an Ethernet TCP/IP controller, multi-color LED driver boards, audio alarm buzzers, and GPIO terminal blocks for synchronization with the slave antenna pedestal.

Step 2.1 · Access Mechanism

Removing Lower Aluminum Chassis Screws

Accessing internal electronics requires removing the recessed bottom countersunk screws to lift the metal shield.

Step 2.2 · Hardware Architecture

Hardware Cabling: Multi-Axis Antenna Loops & Master-Slave Bus

Flawless 3D omnidirectional book reading requires precision impedance-matched cabling and strict noise isolation. The wiring workflow encompasses three dedicated interconnects:

  • Coaxial RF Antenna Feeds: 50Ω RG58 shielded coaxial cables route RF excitation signals from the master reader's high-power RF amplifier to the loop antennas in both acrylic pedestals.
  • Master-to-Slave Synchronized Bus: Shielded multi-core control cable links the master unit to the slave unit to synchronize RF burst cycles and drive the slave strobe/siren simultaneously.
  • Power & Underfloor Conduit: 220V AC input stepped down to regulated 24V DC, routed through an underfloor ADA-compliant metal raceway across the 1.1m entrance corridor.
Step 3.1 · RF Termination

Connecting Antenna & Power

Tightening 50Ω coaxial SMA connectors and 24V DC terminal blocks to the reader.

Step 3.2 · Cable Dress

Completed Wiring & Isolation

All RF and power harnesses secured with strain reliefs to prevent signal cross-talk.

Step 3.3 · Final Anchor

Reassembled in Position

Base cover replaced and fastened; gate standing upright for network software calibration.

Firmware Setup, Ethernet Calibration & AFI Trigger Rule

Connecting a laptop to the gate's RJ45 Ethernet port, our team launched the configuration utility to tune RF output power, calibrate infrared sensor beam breaks, and define the AFI alarm filter rule.

By configuring the target AFI trigger code to 0xC2, the gate continuously scans passing 13.56 MHz tags in 3D orientations. If an un-issued book is detected, the internal relay triggers the high-intensity red LED strobes and audible sirens within 30 milliseconds.

Smartphone NFC Tag Verification (iOS & Android)

A key operational benefit of ISO 15693 HF RFID is that anyone can audit book security using a standard smartphone with NFC:

  1. Launch any standard NFC app (such as NFC Tools or NXP TagInfo) on an iPhone or Android smartphone.
  2. Hold the smartphone against the book tag sticker.
  3. Issued Book: Displays AFI: 0x07 or 0x00 → Walking through the gate is completely silent.
  4. Un-issued Book: Displays AFI: 0xC2 → Walking through the gate triggers instant alarm strobes and sirens.
Issued Book (Check-out OK) AFI: 0x07 / 0x00

Silent Pass Authorization

Tag AFI security byte is cleared upon checkout at the Koha circulation desk or self-service kiosk, allowing silent patron passage.

Un-issued Book (Anti-Theft Active) AFI: 0xC2

Instant Gate Alarm Trigger

AFI byte is locked at 0xC2. Crossing through the gate triggers loud audio buzzer sirens and bright red pedestal LED flashing.

08

Live 3D Omnidirectional Testing & Patron Footfall Counting

Following calibration, our engineering team conducted exhaustive walk-through tests. Books were tested in vertical, horizontal, stacked, and backpack-concealed positions. The 3D loop antenna demonstrated 100% detection reliability across the entire 1.1-meter doorway width.

Integrated infrared sensors provide continuous bidirectional patron passage counting, showing live visitor footfall tallies on the pedestal's digital LED screen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the recommended corridor width between HF RFID library gate pedestals?
Standard spacing is between 900 mm and 1,200 mm (1.2 meters). A 1,100 mm (1.1m) corridor provides optimal 3D magnetic coupling for NXP ICODE SLIX tags while ensuring complete ADA wheelchair accessibility.
How does the HF gate integrate with Koha open-source library software?
Integration operates via standard 3M SIP2 protocol over TCP/IP (Port 6001). When staff issue or return books in Koha, the SIP2 middleware sends an automated command to the desktop RFID reader to toggle the tag AFI security byte between 0xC2 (Alarm) and 0x07 (Disarmed).
Can standard smartphones read and test library RFID tags?
Yes. Modern iPhones (iOS 13+) and Android smartphones supporting ISO 15693 NFC can read the tag UID, memory blocks, and AFI byte using free utility apps like NFC Tools.
What happens if the library local network or internet goes offline?
The gate operates 100% autonomously. Because the AFI security byte is stored directly inside the book's microchip, the gate checks the physical tag over the air and triggers alarms independently of any server, network, or cloud connection.
Can anyone visit Jayaprakash Narayan Library in New Delhi to see the system in action?
Yes. JPL Delhi is a public library located at Zaheer Science Foundation, Gole Market, New Delhi. It is open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM for readers, librarians, and academic administrators.
