Industry Specific 3M Standard Interchange Protocol v2.00 / NISO Z39.83 (NCIP)

3M SIP2 & NCIP Library Automation Protocols

3M SIP2 defines standardized ASCII message strings exchanged between library RFID self-service hardware and the central ILS database. It verifies patron barcodes, processes book check-ins, sets RFID EAS security bits, and handles overdue fines.

Target Deployments

  • University central libraries
  • Public municipal library networks
  • Corporate research archives
  • K-12 school digital libraries

Deploy with OpenRFID

Integrate 3M SIP2 & NCIP into your ERP, warehouse software, or custom mobile app with pre-built C# / C++ drivers.

How does SIP2 handle the RFID EAS security bit during checkout?
When a patron scans their library card and book stack, the kiosk sends SIP2 Command 11. Upon receiving an OK response from Koha, the kiosk hardware writer immediately sets the EAS byte to 0 (unlocked), allowing the patron to exit through security gates without setting off alarms.
