Air Interface GS1 EPC Gen2v2 / ISO/IEC 18000-63

EPC Gen2 & ISO/IEC 18000-63 (RAIN RFID)

EPC Gen2 defines how passive RFID tags harvest electromagnetic energy from an interrogator (reader) antenna and modulate the reflected carrier wave (backscatter). It specifies 4 memory banks, anti-collision Q-algorithm arbitration, and cryptographic session protection.

Layer / Stack
Physical & Data Link (860–960 MHz UHF)
Default Port / Freq
865–867 MHz (India / ETSI) | 902–928 MHz (FCC)
Throughput / Speed
Up to 1,200 tags/sec backscatter inventory rate
Standard Body
GS1 EPC Gen2v2

Core Protocol Architecture & Specifications

  • ✓ 4 distinct memory banks: Reserved (Kill/Access Passwords), EPC, TID (Silicon Factory ID), and User Memory
  • ✓ Dynamic Framed Slotted ALOHA anti-collision with adaptive Q-factor algorithm
  • ✓ Tari timing from 6.25 µs to 25 µs with FM0, Miller-2, Miller-4, and Miller-8 subcarrier modulations
  • ✓ Read range up to 12+ meters with passive inlays (NXP UCODE, Impinj Monza/M700/M800, Alien Higgs)
  • ✓ EPC Gen2v2 cryptographic authentication (AES-128) and Untraceable privacy controls

Verified Hardware Implementations

Our engineering team has thoroughly tested and validated EPC Gen2 (ISO 18000-6C) across the following reader models, embedded modules, and smart transponders:

All RAIN UHF Readers (Zebra, Chainway, Impinj, Hopeland) All Gen2 Inlays (Monza R6-P, UCODE 9, Higgs 9)

Target Deployments

  • Item-level apparel tagging
  • Pallet & carton logistics
  • Automotive chassis WIP tracking
  • High-speed race timing mats

Deploy with OpenRFID

Integrate EPC Gen2 (ISO 18000-6C) into your ERP, warehouse software, or custom mobile app with pre-built C# / C++ drivers.

Can the TID bank be duplicated or cloned?
No. Bank 02 (TID) is laser-etched into the silicon during semiconductor fabrication at TSMC or GlobalFoundries. Genuine chips like NXP UCODE 9 or Impinj M700 cannot have their TID overwritten.
What is the difference between EPC Gen2 and Gen2v2?
Gen2v2 (ISO/IEC 29167) adds cryptographic authentication (AES-128 challenge-response) to prevent counterfeit tags and Untraceable privacy features allowing retailers to hide EPC data post-sale.
