What is the difference between UHF RFID and HF RFID? Which should I use?
UHF RFID (865–867 MHz in India) has a long read range of 1 to 12+ meters and bulk scanning speeds (700+ tags/sec), making it ideal for warehouse inventory, asset tracking, and supply chain logistics. HF RFID (13.56 MHz) has a shorter range (up to 1 meter) and is used for smart cards, library management, and NFC contactless payments.
What is the difference between RFID and FASTag?
FASTag is a specific government-standardized application of UHF RFID (865–867 MHz) deployed for automated toll collection across India under the NETC program. While all FASTags are passive UHF RFID tags, RFID as a technology encompasses a broader ecosystem including HF smart cards, on-metal industrial tags, laundry tags, and enterprise warehouse tracking.
What is the difference between RFID and NFC technology?
NFC (Near Field Communication) operates on HF 13.56 MHz at a very short range (< 5 cm) designed for secure peer-to-peer data exchange and smartphone payments. UHF RFID operates at 865–867 MHz with a long read range (up to 12 meters) and bulk scanning capability (700+ tags/sec), making UHF RFID the industry standard for supply chain, logistics, and inventory management.
Can smartphones read UHF RFID tags directly?
No. Most modern smartphones only support NFC (HF 13.56 MHz) for short-range tap interactions (< 5 cm). To read UHF RFID tags (865–867 MHz) used in warehouses and retail, an external Bluetooth or USB handheld sled scanner (such as Zebra RFD40 or Chainway C72) connected to the mobile device is required.
Which smartphones have built-in HF RFID and NFC readers?
Almost all modern smartphones feature built-in 13.56 MHz HF RFID (NFC) readers. This includes Apple iPhones (iPhone 7, 8, X, XR, XS, and iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 series) and nearly all modern Android smartphones from Samsung (Galaxy S & A series), Google Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Motorola. They support ISO/IEC 14443 Type A/B (Mifare, NTAG) and ISO/IEC 15693 (NXP ICODE vicinity) protocols.
How do I read an RFID or HF/NFC tag on an iPhone?
On iPhone XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16, Background Tag Reading is automatic — simply hold the top edge of your iPhone against the tag (within 1–2 cm) and a notification banner will appear. On iPhone 7, 8, or X, open Control Center and tap the NFC Tag Reader icon. To inspect raw tag memory, UID numbers, or non-NDEF industrial chips, download free apps like NFC Tools or NXP TagInfo from the App Store.
